Building a balanced future for bushfire protection*
The Australian Bushfire Building Conference 2021, planned for August, has been postponed to 1-3 November, due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.
Building industry experts will meet in the Blue Mountains, for the 7th Australian Bushfire Building Conference to tackle the tough questions around planning and building in bushfire prone areas.
Organised by the Blue Mountains Economic Enterprise (BMEE), in partnership with Blue Mountains City Council, this year’s theme of ‘Addressing the tensions: Are we getting the balance right?’ will be explored across the main two-day program.
The conference will be a hybrid event with a live and in-person conference hub at the Fairmont Resort in Leura (if COVID-19 restrictions allow) and a virtual component through a dedicated conference platform which will run simultaneously. If the live event cannot go ahead the conference will be held through the virtual platform.
Well-renowned national speakers will present the latest research, case studies and best practices for building in bushfire prone areas, with the aim of finding the right balance to move the industry forward.
Blue Mountains City Council’s Development and Building Services Manager, Alex Williams said the conference presented a great opportunity to learn from bushfire experts and building professionals on how we can build better within the Australian landscape.
“The 2019/20 fire season demonstrated that this task is more important than ever. Threats to life and property have increased with prolonged fire seasons and more intense fire events.
“Our natural systems are under great strain from urban encroachment and the impacts of high-intensity fire events. Historically, subdivisions and planning for bushfire protection pay little credence to an ecological imperative.
“There are great tensions at play here and this conference provides the opportunity to dive right in.”
The Australian Bushfire Building Conference is proud to partner with the New South Wales Rural Fire Service, Fire Protection Association (FPA) Australia and ABC Radio Sydney. The Conference is sponsored by TBA Firefly, Bushfire Control, Heroal, Warringtonfire and Eco Logical Australia.
