Illuminating local youth
Gunnedah Shire Council is committed to developing young residents in the regional New South Wales community.
Gunnedah Shire Council’s Youth Development Officer Sewa Emojong is passionate about providing opportunities for young people in the community.
She recently accompanied three young representatives, Kustiani Tuckerman, Tre Martin and Ben Stahl, along with two other volunteers, to the 2016 Luminosity Youth Summit.
The Summit is a national congress of young people, which includes speakers and performers from all over the world.
Leadership, selflessness and gratitude were key themes discussed in many of the presentations, along with the ability to follow your instinct and bounce back after tough times.
“I’ve previously attended the conference and seen how valuable it is, said Ms Emojong. “I was determined to make this opportunity available for Gunnedah Youth and had the privilege of taking three young people to this event.
“The three young Gunnedah delegates must be commended for their maturity and the exceptional way they represented Gunnedah.
“Tre had the courage to compete in a dance battle in front of over 300 people and took out the competition!
“The delegates even managed to befriend one of the guest speakers, who was also very impressed by the way they carried themselves as a group.
“It was such a great experience for the young people and I’m looking forward to more young people from Gunnedah having the opportunity to experience the Luminosity Youth Summit next year.”
Another recent development is the Gunnedah Youth Council, which enables people between the ages of 12-25 in the Gunnedah Shire to have a voice and be represented.
It also provides a number of different development opportunities and serves as a platform to empower young people to search for their own opportunities.
