Beautiful by Day, Spectacular by Night*
The new destination playground at South Bank’s Riverside Green was officially re-opened on Saturday 3 October to popular acclaim. Situated in an extremely busy section of the famous esplanade in South Bank, the multi-layered playground features state-of-the-art play equipment, some of which has not been seen before in Queensland.
Designed and built by the world’s leading specialist playground company, KOMPAN, it features numerous activities for families with kids from two to 15 years. South Bank is Brisbane’s leading lifestyle and cultural destination attracting more than 10 million visitors each year. So the refurbished site needed to be a world-class facility.
KOMPAN created an integrated design with age-appropriate facilities located in different areas to cater for a diverse user group.
The toddler space features a custom pirate ship, slide, swing and climbing facilities. For older kids, the embankment area has an extra wide slide, Belt Bridge, climbing rope and climbing cleats. The all ages play area has a spinning carousel and swings. While the more challenging play area features a skywalk, spiral slide, multi-level slide and tougher rope climb. All the facilities are new and safer than the previous playground and create a more entertaining experience for visitors.
But the site has not just been designed for kids. It provides facilities for a complete family experience beyond just the play activities. There are new picnic tables, barbecues and a large grass area with a view of the iconic Brisbane River.
BrisbaneKids.com.au said, “This is a park unlike any other playground in Brisbane – the designers have thought of absolutely everything! It’s the first park in Brisbane with a light up skywalk, making it perfect for day and night time play. This is the ultimate family destination that everyone, no matter what their age, can enjoy. It’s officially the coolest playground in Brisbane.”
So while it is perfect during the day for kids to play, it is also spectacular at night, as visitors can observe the city lights come to life, while enjoying a barbeque or picnic by the river. The playground is expected to continue to be a popular family attraction and a wonderful contribution to the culture of the South Bank precinct. The playground is also easily accessible, with flat paths leading from the car park, disability parking bays readily available and the toilet block is on ground level with ample shaded areas. Most areas of the park are accessible to a wheel chair and prams.
KOMPAN’s exclusive agents for Queensland Urban Play have pioneered this project and continually apply their innovative approach to create magical playspaces for all ages.
