Queens Park receives a royal upgrade*
In 2009, a Masterplan for Queens Park was developed by the City of Greater Geelong (CoGG) with much community and stakeholder input, identifying many opportunities for development.
The key message in the vision was for a high environmental, landscape and nature based playground.
Ikonic Playgrounds, the exclusive supplier of KOMPAN and Corocord equipment in Victoria were engaged by the CoGG to formalise a playground design that met with the criteria of the Masterplan.
The vision for the playground in the 2009 Masterplan was to create a ‘Forest themed playground to be sited under the existing trees, and the design of the playground is to take advantage of the setting’.
The final unique design is based around the use of trees and climbing which make this playground the first of its kind in Australia.
Director of Ikonic Playgrounds Mark Chatman said the project is a perfect example of nature and play combining to create a memorable experience
“The colours of the rope and connections blend effortlessly into the environment and this was an integral part of the design process.
“Credit goes to the CoGG for thinking outside the box and allowing us to assist them to deliver this beautiful play space.”
The custom combination of rope nets provides a linkage between the bridges to the bespoke ‘tree house’.
These rope nets utilise a special Corocord tree connection clamp system that allows an installation system that does not harm the tree.
Further combinations of nets link in to create a wide variety of physical play opportunities.
The installation has utilised noninvasive footings that prevented harm to the root system, which is also an Australian first.
This playground pioneers the way for the integration of play structures around old growth trees where arborists have confirmed it is safe to do so.
Tom Leggatt, Landscape Architect at the City of Greater Geelong has been involved in the Queens Park playground development since it was funded and said he hopes that kids and adults will enjoy the various elements for a long time to come.
