Project celebrates surfing’s eliteThe achievements of the best surfers ever to compete at Surfers Point in Margaret River will be immortalised with the installation of commemorative stainless steel plaques on the staircases at the world famous break.
Delivered to the Shire of Augusta Margaret River in July, the plaques recognise all the past winners of the Margaret River Surf Classic and Margaret River Surf Pro events and include names such as Mark Occhilupo, Melanie Redman-Carr and Tom Carroll and local identities Ric Gath, Dave Macauley and Josh Palmateer.
Shire of Augusta Margaret River Project Manager Wayne Prangnell said the plaques were being installed as part of the Surfers Point Upgrade project as one of the cultural and historical design elements.
“The idea for a Surfing Hall of Fame was first floated by the Margaret River Boardriders Club during the project consultation period.
“It was a very fitting proposal and the plaques are a fantastic way to celebrate the history of surfing.
“There’s been many elite surfers take on these waves and it’s certainly an appropriate location to give recognition to some great champions of the sport.”
Plaques will be added to the Hall of Fame each year following the Surf Classic and Surf Pro events.
