Praise for Mackay's online City Deals initiative
One of Australia's leading Internet marketers has praised Mackay Regional Council for establishing its "City Deals" initiative, which is a free, community based online discount scheme.
Booktopia CEO Tony Nash said City Deals offered a great opportunity for city centre businesses to have a presence in the online world.
"I have seen a lot of online coupon offers and this is by the far the best," he said.
"It is community based, costs nothing to participate, companies can set their own discounts and it was conceived and implemented by a local council."
Economic Development Portfolio Councillor Dave Perkins said a growing number of consumers are making the connection between online media and the in store experience.
"Studies indicate a soaring majority of Australian shoppers are using the internet to assist with their in store experience," he said.
"Traditional shopping now includes downloadable store guides, stock details, exclusive deals, specials and anything new."
Mackay City business can use online tools such as City Deals to complement their business marketing.
Tony Nash said council's partnership with city businesses had set a benchmark for other councils to follow.
"You have to take your hat off to Mackay Regional Council, how many other councils in Australia are trying to come up with ways for people to buy local?"
Councillor Dave Perkins said the website continues to generate interest from customers and retailers.
"Services on the Mackay City Centre website are free and manageable by the business."
