Council spreads festive cheer

From Sarina Range to Eungella, Bloomsbury to Koumala and everywhere in between, Mackay Regional Council’s Christmas grants will dole out lashings of festive cheer across the region.

The grants have given the community’s festive celebrations a $10,000 boost, with 14 community groups receiving up to $750 in festive funding.

This year’s grants were spread between Christmas carols, community gatherings and charitable organisations.

Councillor Fran Mann said while it was great to be able to support events that involved and united communities, it was also pleasing to see organisations like YIRS One Stop Youth Shop receive funding.

“YIRS are putting on a hot lunch for disadvantaged and disengaged youth who often have no family to celebrate with.

“No one should be alone at this time of year.”

Cr Mann said it was also fantastic to see the Calen Community Christmas Party returning after a lengthy hiatus.

“They are decorating the Calen and District War Memorial Hall, putting on affordable food and drinks and live carols and family tunes.

“Throw in a photo opportunity with Santa and it’ll be a great evening.”

Cr Mann said the grants went to groups, clubs and associations wanting to involve their entire community, not just group members.

“We want to make sure everyone has access to a local Christmas celebration.”
