Horner ó a helping hand for local government

We all know that time is a valuable resource and it makes sense to draw upon specialists when time is of the essence.

Horner Recruitment has been providing a helping hand to local government organisations in Victoria for over 10 years, supplying qualified and experienced temporary and permanent staff to meet councilís additional needs.

Introducing Cam and Anna, Horner Recruitmentís dedicated local government consultants:

Cam, what is your past experience working within local government?

I spent an invaluable eight years in local government. Most of this time was spent at Frankston City Council in a range of roles, from Recreation Officer to Aquatics Manager, and eventually in a performance improvement role within the Customer Service team, as Service Excellence Coordinator.

This cross-organisational role, which I later carried out at the City of Port Phillip, gave me firsthand insight into the vast array of departments and service providers within the local government sector.

During this time I helped successfully build a high performing Customer Service team, of which many went on to work in administrative roles across other departments.

How has your experience assisted you in recruiting for local government?

Whilst all councils have a unique culture, I believe my exposure to various departments as an employee has given me an understanding of the intricacies of local government, whether itís the importance of following policies and procedures, the focus on community or understanding the various sub cultures within the teams.

Iím particularly confident about accessing high performing people with the right mix of skills and behaviours to work within local government in either temporary or permanent roles.

Anna, during your past five years at Horner, what is one of the challenging local government recruitment projects you have worked on?
Last year, Horner Recruitment was the appointed agency to assist an inner city Melbourne council with the recruitment of 22 new Parking Officers, both permanent and contracted.

This involved creating a detailed and tailored recruitment process specific to the requirements of the council. It was a challenging project due to the short time frame, however it was also highly rewarding, as we found some really brilliant people who continue to thrive in their roles.

What are some of the positions you have filled for your local government clients?

We have a constant stream of candidates experienced in local government work on our database.  Iíve recently provided staff such as:

Outdoor on-hired workers; parking & traffic officers, horticulturists, arborists, general & qualified labourers, events and waste management.

Office/admin staff; EAs, PAs, customer service, data entry, accounts and payroll, receptionists and coordinators.

Industry qualified; environmental health officers, engineers, urban planners, OH&S and HR staff.
