Floating library for harbour ferry commuters
Having kicked off in March, a mobile lending library is now operating at Manly Wharf each weekday from 7.15am to 9.00am. Manly Library Afloat is a mobile library service positioned in the forecourt of Manly Wharf. It offers books and talking books to commuters. The material is carried to the Wharf from nearby Manly Library in a custom fitted electric golf cart style vehicle, which can accommodate up to 1,000 publications. “Our aim is to have current high interest fiction and non fiction titles available to ferry passengers,” said Manly Mayor, Doctor Peter Macdonald. “This is another way for Council to make the library more accessible and to reach prospective library patrons who may not have previously used our library facilities or those who are pushed for time in the daily rush.” Normal borrowing privileges apply, including the standard three week loan. Books can be returned to Manly Library Afloat or to the Manly Library itself. “Patrons who wish to join Manly Library Afloat can do so at the Wharf as Council’s library staff have palm top (hand held) digital technology, which allows them electronic access to the Manly Library catalogue,” the Mayor said. “If commuters are in a rush, they can leave their details and their membership card will be available the next morning. “This new service enables us to advertise the extensive range of resources available in Manly Library.” For further information contact Manly Library on (02) 9976 1721.
