Supporting carers

Gwydir Shire acknowledges the crucial role carers play in the community. With the aid of a $40,000 grant, Council, together with Hunter New England Health, has established a Carer Support Project. The project aims to provide information to carers in the Shire, as well as develop an ongoing and viable carers network.

Council has contacted over 60 volunteer carers in the community and issued them with an information pack. The pack informs carers on issues such as managing stress and medication; identifying various forms of mental illness; and how to navigate services available locally and regionally.

Gwydir's Training and Development Officer, Rod Smith, said networks are vital to assist people with information and support.

A network for parents with children suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has recently been established through the project.

"Council approached Tamworth Family Support Services to provide a 16 hour course on ADHD, which is usually delivered over an eight week period," Rod Smith said. "During May, two consultants from Tamworth travelled to Warialda to deliver the course over three consecutive Tuesdays. Participants were shown skills during each lesson, and were then able to practice these skills before learning further techniques the following week. Some 15 participants attended the course, with a significant number since forming a support group that meets regularly."

As well as providing educational resources, Gwydir Shire also organises social events to ensure carers can meet on a regular basis.

"We advertise the project at shows and expos so that all carers are aware that support is available," Rod Smith said. "Council also runs activities during Carers week each October."
