Thuringowa hosts inaugural Festival of Learning
Thuringowa City Council's first ever Festival of Learning was held in October. Introduced as a key way to develop the City as one of learning and development, this unique far north Queensland event featured formal and informal learning opportunities and displays. Comprising over 50 displays, workshops included scuba diving, cooking, money management, swimming, music making, martial arts and more. "Learning offers so many opportunities for self development both professionally and socially," said Thuringowa Councillor, Jenny Lane. "What better way than in a fun and festive environment." The week long festival finished with a Day of Discovery at the Riverway lagoon precinct. Riverway stretches along 11 kilometers of the Ross River from Black Weir to the Dam. The Riverway project is opening up the river for greater access for both residents and visitors, while still protecting and enhancing its natural beauty. Councillor Lane said the Day of Discovery catered for all ages, with participants enjoying new learning in a fun and festive environment. "There was something to see and do for people of all ages and interests," she said. "From fire trucks to puppeteering, belly dancing, sword fighting, acting and studying at university - the list was extensive and the possibilities endless." Thuringowa Events Coordinator, Tom Aubrey, said people of all ages and abilities were encouraged to participate in one hour music workshops. "Participants gained hands on experience with all aspects of recording, writing and arranging music," he said. "They were also able to take home a copy of their works on a CD. All equipment, such as keyboards, instruments and a hard disc recorder workstation were supplied by the Riverway Arts Centre. Participants gained knowledge of basic music and recording theory and practiced in an atmosphere of artistic cooperation and exploration." |
