Upskilling in event management*

The events field has professionalised rapidly over the past ten years. In recognition of the emergence of event management as a profession in its own right, in 1999 the University of Technology, Sydney established the Australian Centre for Event Management (ACEM).

Since its establishment ACEM has gone on to become a global leader in event management education, training and research.

Reflective of ACEM’s commitment to enhancing the skill and knowledge base of the Australian event industry is its Executive Certificate in Event Management and new event management workshop series, both commencing in July 2006. ACEM’s Executive Certificate program has become a benchmark qualification in event management, and had graduated some 3,000 students both in Australia and overseas.

It features the authors of the major text (Festival and Special Event Management) in the field, as well as leading practitioners.

The workshop series seeks to update event managers in key knowledge and skill areas by showcasing current best practice.

In the July 2006 series, the areas that have been chosen are event safety and crowd management, risk management, event creation, planning special events and conference management.

Presenting this series of one to four day workshops will be some of Australia’s most respected and awarded event managers, including David Grant (AO), Warwick Hamilton and Amanda Trotman.

These presenters will be joined by Professor Chris Kemp, an international expert in event crowd and safety management, and a former concert promoter and venue manager, who will be running a four day workshop, and Andrew Tatrai, a Certified Practicing Risk Manager with over 25 years experience in the field of events.

For further details regarding these programs, please consult the ACEM website at www.acem.uts.edu.au or ring Wendy Symonds, the ACEM Administrator on (02) 9514 5496.
