The Strand is Australia’s cleanest beach
Townsville’s Strand is being featured on billboards throughout Queensland and New South Wales promoting its new title as Australia’s Cleanest Beach. The Strand’s win in the Australian Clean Beach Challenge is the latest in a number of accolades earned by Townsville’s seafront jewel in recent years. The title will have significant promotional value for Townsville via the billboards, and will enhance The Strand’s reputation as a city icon. The Strand beat hundreds of beaches to come through various stages of judging to win the award which was assessed on community and environmental standards. The win also enhances Townsville’s growing reputation as a clean and green city. The Townsville community has a great track record of embracing anti litter and recycling campaigns, such as the Don’t Waste Townsville campaign which successfully focuses on litter management at major events on The Strand. Community involvement in the annual Clean Up Australia campaign also remains one of the strongest in the State with around 2,500 volunteers participating in this year’s event. Citiwaste was also in the action, collecting more than 3,000 large bags of rubbish from sites around the Twin Cities, while Council’s Parks Department staff helped out with collections on Magnetic Island. |
