Gawler’s event kit wins risk management awardAn event kit to assist Councils in organising Council activities has won a Risk Management Award for the Town of Gawler. The 2004 Local Government Association of South Australia Workers Compensation Scheme Occupational Health and Safety Awards were announced last October. The award and prize money of $10,000, provided by the LGA Mutual Liability Scheme, reward Councils’ innovative and best practice approaches to reducing risks to the public when using community facilities, public areas or joining in Council events. Gawler developed of an Event Management Resource System that provides a comprehensive checklist of issues to address in all types of events where Council is involved. The aim of the project was to package all the procedures and documentation required to arrange and stage a community based event into a systematic and user friendly booklet. The ‘Event Kit’ is a ‘how to’ manual, covering event inspection and management plans, pre and post management checklists and procedural reviews of all systems. It is available from the Gawler Visitor Information Centre and is distributed to Service Clubs and Community Groups within Gawler. Applicable to all councils, other Councils have already expressed interest in adopting the ‘Event Kit’ for their areas. Over the next 12 months the kit will be tested and fine tuned before being offered to the South Australian Local Government Association for use as a standard model.
