New look for New Year’s Eve celebrations for Sydney The City of Sydney’s world famous New Year’s Eve celebrations will have a new look in 2002 under recently appointed Artistic Director, Leo Schofield. He will work with the City of Sydney’s inhouse creative and technical production team to produce a spectacle that showcases the City and its magnificent harbour.
Improving the regional business environment The Good Oil by Rod Brown * A group called the Regional Business Development Analysis Panel is currently interviewing people across Australia – to get ideas on how the Federal Government can improve the regional business environment and reduce impediments to growth. A report will go to our political masters around March next year. I am currently writing a submission to this panel on behalf of Clusters Asia Pacific Inc. The submission argues that there are three golden rules in generating investment in any region.

Still very much in its infancy, but nevertheless with the potential to grow into a major tourist attraction for the region, the proposal for the Mary River Freshwater Aquarium is expected to be a major economic boost to the region.

These initiatives are collectively referred to as State specific and regional migration initiatives. The outcome of the 2001-02 migration program indicates that increasing numbers of skilled migrants continue to go to regional areas of Australia under these initiatives.
Enhancing cultural activities in Gunnedah With the development of its performing arts and cultural centre, the Gunnedah district is well on its way to establishing Gunnedah with a state of the art cultural precinct. The Shire of Gunnedah is located in the north west of New South Wales in the Upper Namoi Valley region. It has a population of approximately 12,812 people and is some 450 kilometres from Sydney.
Aged care extension delivers benefits With the extension of the its Home for the Aged under way, Mid Murray Council has predicted that it will provide direct and indirect gains. The $1 million extension at the main centre of the community owned Mid Murray Home for the Aged in Mannum will increase occupancy from 10 to 33 beds.

Encounter 2002 Celebrations of Flinders’ voyage along the South Australian coastline In marking the bicentenary of Englishman Matthew Flinders and Frenchman Nicholas Baudin’s ‘meeting’ at Encounter Bay, South Australia, in 1802, the District Council of Yorke Peninsula, along with the South Australian Tourism Commission and three other participating Councils, held a celebration and re-enactment of Flinders’ voyage of the SA coast, entitled Encounter 2002.

New tourism focus for Kentish Tasmania’s Kentish Council is playing a key role in the development of the region’s tourism industry by establishing a special tourism committee. The Cradle Mountain Tourism Association is a working group comprising business representatives and individuals that provides a commercial tourism service in the Cradle Mountain precinct. The group aims to develop and implement a marketing and development plan that will again establish Cradle Mountain as the pre-eminent natural holiday destination in Tasmania.
Major tourist attraction looking for a permanent home The National Museum of Australian Pottery, Australia’s first museum dedicated to 19th and early 20th century Australian pottery, is looking for a permanent home. Established in 1995, the National Museum of Australian Pottery became the first fully accredited private museum in Australia, under the Museum Accreditation Program (MAP), in 1998.
Cycling along the Todd River Cyclists will soon be able to ride all the way from Old Timers on the South Stuart Highway, along the Todd River and through to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station, in what will surely be one of the most scenic leisure activities available at Alice Springs.Alice Springs Town Council has committed $70,000 for the completion of the bicycle track along the Todd River.
