Murilla showcases its diversity of opportunities

On 6 June, Queensland Day, Murilla Shire Council took an innovative step in staging the Murilla Vision Millennium Roadshow/Expo at the Carlton Crest Hotel, Brisbane. Mayor of Murilla Shire, Councillor Roderick Gilmour, said that 6 June was deliberately chosen for this event as the Expo expresses what Queensland Day is all about – celebrating the Shire’s future, lifestyle, business and industry.

“Murilla is situated about four hours west of Brisbane and has a wealth of opportunities available for everyone,” he said.

As with most rural communities, the Shire is continually searching for ways to highlight local innovation and business success.

The Roadshow/Expo was opened by Deputy Prime Minister, John Anderson. A promotional event , the Expo featured the diversity of opportunity available. It aimed to showcase to both the private sector and Government the experience and opportunities that exist within this vibrant Shire.

This unique initiative forms part of the Murilla Vision Millennium Economic Development Strategy.

“The Murilla Vision Millennium is all about a rural Shire doing something to help itself,” Councillor Gilmour said. “Council believes the Expo is a first for a small rural Shire and leads the way in promotion and development.”

The strategy aims to foster and support economic and social development through projects that will have a positive impact on the Shire’s development. On the day, a myriad displays and presentations included the following

• Release of the Murilla Skills and Resources Directory
• Unveiling of the Miles Intermodal Freight Hub Proposal, launched by Senator Ron Boswell
• Plans for tourism, including Dogwood Crossing at Miles – a new centre which is part of the Heritage Trails Network
• Unveiling of the Murilla Web Site, launched by Queensland’s Minister for Innovation and Information Economy, Paul Lucas
• New developments being undertaken
• Discussions with corporate partners
• Discovery of investment opportunities
• Learning about the Murilla community.

Initial funding to run the Expo was secured through the Federal Government’s Regional Assistance program. In addition, the Shire secured corporate sponsorship from various organisations.
