Greenhouse Action? These Australian Councils say YES!

Cr David Dawn, Mayor of the City of Frankston, is passionate about his City's leading role in reducing Global Warming, through the Cities for Climate Protection campaign. "Global change begins with action on the local level," he said. "We have a significant capacity to lead in the area of climate protection"

City of Melbourne CEO, Michael Malouf can see the implications for the bottom line, as well as the grand vision: "Joining CCP will result in wide ranging environmental, economic and social benefits for the MCC and the Melbourne community. As a result of the energy audits of several Council buildings, significant savings in energy, cost and greenhouse gas emissions have already been identified."

Local Governments around the world are responding to the threat of climate change by joining the Cities for Climate Protection TM campaign: an innovative program which assists Local Governments and their communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Manager of Recruitment and Political Support for the CCP campaign, Martin Brennan said, "We already have 300 local Councils around the world involved in this campaign - from Berlin to Budapest, Bangkok to Oslo. But of all the countries that have taken part, Australia has seen the fastest rate of growth and now has 60 CCP Councils."

The Benefits:

  • Councils identify and save money on energy bills
  • Links Councils with their communities and local leading businesses on action for the environment
  • An international campaign - over 300 Local Governments world wide - through the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives
  • Supports new sustainable industries and generate additional revenue by selling your greenhouse initiatives and expertise

"The first step is to identify the amount of greenhouses gases being generated locally and then to forecast how much they will grow," Martin Brennan said. "Then we know where the greatest savings can be made.

"Councils can reduce greenhouse gases from their own operations, such as landfills or streetlights, making big financial savings on their energy bills at the same time. The savings can be reinvested to find even more ways to cut energy use. New jobs and new industries are being created along the way.

"They can then share these benefits with their local community, by helping to reduce the CO2 produced by households, local businesses and transport systems."

Federal Minister for Environment, Senator Robert Hill, has commended the leadership of the Councils and highlighted the need for all sectors of the community to play their part in addressing greenhouse if Australia was to meet its Kyoto greenhouse target.

The Australian Greenhouse Office and the International Council for Local Environment Initiatives (ICLEI) have joined forces to establish the Cities for Climate Protection campaign in Australia. The campaign is being funded by a commitment of the Federal Government of $13 million over five years.
