Barcelona to host LG's 34th World CongressEvery two years the world community of Local Government has an opportunity to meet and assess development of local democracy. This year, discussions will centre around Local Government uniting in a global mission of democratisation, decentralisation and cooperation. The opportunity will be provided by the International Union of Local Authorities, whose Asia Pacific Regional Section, chaired by Mayor Peter Woods OAM, Mayor of Concord and President of the NSW Local Government Association, will be taking an important role in the 34th World Congress of Local Government. More than 1,000 delegates from around the world will attend the Congress, to be staged in Barcelona between 21 and 24 March 1999. Sub themes of the Congress will include Local Democracy in the World; Sustainability and Agenda 21; and social cohesion and participation. The Congress provides an important opportunity to discover the emerging issues and trends in other parts of the world which inevitably will impact here. Registration packages and further details are available from Brendan Hartnett at the NSW Local Government and Shires Associations, GPO Box 7003 Sydney NSW 2001, fax (02) 9242 4111 or email bhartnett@lgsa.org.au |
