Call for entries to 1999 National Awards for Innovation in Local Government

The National Awards for Innovation in Local Government provide an opportunity for councils throughout Australia to gain recognition for innovation in all aspects of local government. The Awards are open to all councils, including rural councils who are also eligible for the Rural Award.

Gain recognition for your council's achievements

By entering the National Awards for Innovation in Local Government your council is eligible for the following awards:

  • National Award (overall winner)
  • Rural Award (overall rural winner)
  • Category Award
  • Best Rural (for category)
  • Commendation.

However, all entries are recognised and published in a national guide to good practice in local government.

Opportunity to raise the profile of your council and share experiences

Entrants have the opportunity to raise the profile of their council and share information through networking at the Awards presentation ceremony (finalists have their trips to the presentation paid for), by having their entries published in a guide to good practice and on the internet, and through national media coverage.

A national forum for leading practice in all aspects of local government

The Awards are a forum for leading practice in local government and offer councils an opportunity to exchange expertise and information about local government activities, projects and partnerships.

The Awards are designed to reward excellence and innovation in areas such as:

  • civil, mechanical and traffic engineering
  • infrastructure such as water, waste water, and power
  • planning and design of developments, public spaces, and housing
  • environmental management, biodiversity, natural habitat preservation and restoration, the creation of wildlife corridors, waste recycling, coastal management, and energy efficiency
  • information technology, database and multimedia applications, information networks, and information technology strategies
  • leisure and community services, sporting and recreational facilities, tourism, cultural programs, general public health, aged care, child care, community participation, and special needs programs
  • organisational practices and efficiency, economic and employment development, industrial relations, organisational management, customer service, process engineering, benchmarking and occupational health and safety
  • regional development, business ventures, transport, export programs, tourism.

Who can enter?

Any local government body including:

  • councils, community groups, or regional organisations of councils and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community councils
  • Local Government Associations
  • other local government bodies such as local government industry and training committees.

How do I enter?

The National Office of Local Government is currently preparing an application booklet. This booklet will set out the categories for this year's Awards and the process for preparing your application. The Awards will be launched in May and presented in November.
