Digital dashboards - monitoring the corporate digital nervous system*

When industry heavyweights talk on IT Strategy and Directions, the astute observer listens and attempts to understand the implications. One such beacon was recently lit by Microsoft's Bill Gates. When he referred to the concept of the Digital Dashboard and its place in the 'Digital Nervous System' strategy.

The Digital Dashboard concept promotes the idea that standard messaging infrastructures and formula information dissemination and filtering tools, such as the Intranet - Internet - Internet Browser, can together be capable of delivering much more than just data, they can deliver information.

Further, they can support and monitor best practice by delivering the right information to the right person at the right time and for the right cost. With high service delivery expectations on Councils, better information management can translate directly into enhanced performance.

The corporate 'ECG' is an example of a simple yet powerful application that provides Enterprise Information System (EIS) and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) monitoring facilities.

It was the winning entry in Microsoft Australia's recent national Digital Dashboard competition to develop an executive information prototype, based on the Digital Nervous System Framework.

The Corporate ECG represents the following considerable benefits to Local Government.

€ Adds value to the existing messaging infrastructure.

€ Links raw data and graphical display of KPI Information

€ Provides a familiar platform for research and development (i.e. links to Intranet and Internet and News groups.

€ Allows KPI and benchmarking information to be themelessly merged with the corporation messaging platform.

€ Gives end users the ability to tailor the data presentation to suit their roles and responsibility.
