Sport and Recreation in Local Government - a case study resource

The Sport and Recreation in Local Government Case Study resource brings together over 150 case studies of successful sport and recreation projects and initiatives. They have been drawn from material collected from local Councils and sport and recreation organisations throughout Australia over recent years.

It is hoped this resource will encourage local Councils and community sport and recreation organisations to share these ideas. They can be adapted to suit a variety of needs to enhance the well being of individuals and the community at large.

The case studies have been categorised into specific areas. These include funding schemes, facilities, joint usage, junior sport and pricing policies. Each case study has a brief description of the project and contact details to enable interested agencies to obtain further information.

A second edition of the case study resource is currently being collated. These new examples, along with the case studies already detailed in the 1998 edition, will provide a comprehensive national data base of Local Government best practice models from throughout Australia.

However, one of the shortcomings of the data base is the lack of suitable exemplars highlighting case studies focusing on certain specific program areas/populations.

Support is required from Councils to rectify this situation. There is a real need for case studies in the areas of people with disabilities, women, indigenous and ethnic groups.

If your Council has information to share on sport and recreation case studies involving these specific populations please contact Jeff Dry on (08) 8416 6730. Appropriate action will be taken to document this material which will then become part of the second edition of the case study resource.
