World class regional educationA common problem in regional Australia is the need for young people to leave the area for study or work. Once gone, they seldom return, depleting country areas of one of its most valuable resources. In Coffs Harbour, young people no longer need to leave for further study or vocational training. The Coffs Harbour Education Campus (CHEC) combines campuses of Southern Cross University (SCU) with TAFE NSW (North Coast Institute of TAFE) and the Department of School Education, providing a senior college for Years 11 and 12. This unique combination of three educational sectors currently has a combined student body of 3,200, with 400 at senior college level, 2,000 in TAFE courses and 800 at University. Regarded as one of the most dynamic campuses in the country, CHEC offers courses geared to local needs, giving graduates the added advantage of gaining skills which will help them find employment in the region. Local industry and employers have the advantage of access to qualified, enthusiastic, locally knowledgeable staff. The Coffs Harbour Campus of SCU provides studies in multimedia and information technology, business studies, human services and tourism and hospitality. At the same time, it is continuing to develop a high research profile with an emphasis on regional issues. TAFE offers a broad range of study options from certificate to advanced diploma levels, while the senior college offers a full range of courses leading to the HSC. An OECD Study recently placed this campus among the top 46 educational institutions worldwide. The location of the campus in its picturesque environment and with world class standards is proving a drawcard for overseas students for both full time and short courses. Recently, some 130 Japanese students undertook English studies as part of a holiday program. Other students come from Thailand, Indonesia, Laos, Korea and Russia. Established in 1995, the campus is already expanding and work on Stage Two is well underway. The new development will include courses in early childhood studies, agribusiness and hairdressing.
