CDS litter traps attract world attentionA growing number of Australian Councils deserve a pat on the back for thinking globally and acting locally. Their foresight has ensured they are at the winning edge of world stormwater technology. The Councils have installed CDS litter traps, a unique solution to remove oil, sediment and litter from stormwater systems, preventing the pollutants from fouling our beaches and waterways. The patented technology was developed by CDS Technologies, whose headquarters are at Mornington, Victoria. The CDS units are capable of trapping particles smaller than 0.6mm, unlike any other system of its kind. CDS spokesman Charles Humphries says no other stormwater system comes near the CDS litter trap. Capture rates of at least 95 percent of gross pollutants, such as vegetation, food and drink containers, items as small as match heads and plastic packaging are being recorded in extensive trial sites in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. "Traditional systems capture only 10 to 20 percent of pollutants so the CDS invention is a technical breakthrough. Its effectiveness has attracted interest in New Zealand and the United States where we are working with the American Environmental Protection Agency," Charles said. The concrete and stainless steel CDS units are designed to be retrofitted into existing or newly constructed drainage systems and use non blocking, indirect screening to deflect particles into a catchment basket or sump. The system works equally as well on piped systems or open channels. Installations include those within Patawalonga and River Torrens catchments; Mosman Council's Balmoral Beach; Mornington Peninsula Shire's foreshore at Rosebud and Sutherland Shire. Multiple installations of this revolutionary system are being installed at the future Olympic Games site at Homebush and it is currently protecting waterways from the southern shores of Tasmania to Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
