Property professions produce a joint paper on native title

The Royal Australian Planning Institute (RAPI) and the Australian Institute of Valuers and Land Economists (AIVLE) have joined forces to produce a ground breaking guide to the implications of native title.

The purpose of the paper is to provide the known basic facts and practical information for members about native title. In particular, it looks at the impact of the Native Title Act 1993 on planning processes - both statutory and non-statutory, and land valuation procedures. "As professionals making decisions or framing recommendations for land owners, investors, financial institutions and decision makers about the use, development and/or preservation of land, we need to be acutely aware of the ramifications of native title," said Greg Clarke, National President AIVLE.

Sandy Vigar, National President, RAPI, said that the paper focuses on providing information on the important legal and practical implications of native title for these professions to make informed decisions. One of the key features of the paper is that it provides a practical checklist for members to consider when advising on property matters subject to native title.

This was the first time a joint paper had been published by both Institutes. "It is most pleasing to see the Property Professions beginning to work together on issues that affect us all," Sandy Vigar said. "Perhaps the application of common sense can be the major contribution of our professions to the native title debate," Greg Clarke added.

Copies of the paper can be purchased from RAPI, telephone (03) 9819 0728, or AIVLE on (06) 282 2411.
